Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Program Coordination

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with prison and community partners. Perform outreach, and identify new partnerships and needs.

  • Administer logistics for external and internal workshops and art engagements including scheduling, transportation, volunteers, permits and authorizations, material procurement.

  • Oversees daily operations for carceral programs.

  • Create and maintain program records, reports, presentations, proposals, and curricula. Gather participant data and compile reports for funders and impact reports.

  • Facilitate workshops with the Program Manager, Art Therapist, and other Life On Art staff.

  • Coordinate program communications between staff, participants, partner organizations and other stakeholders. Co-create marketing materials and support distribution.

Marketing and Communication 

  • Contribute to co-written newsletter and create program specific content. Create social media content showcasing SQRC program and Life On Art’s community building.

  • Plan and implement Life On Art events with colleagues and volunteers. 

  • Represent Life On Art at community and prison events. 

Team Collaboration

  • Participate in team meetings, professional development, and organizational events.

  • Contribute to a culture of learning, shared leadership, and creativity.

  • Be a proactive, flexible, and engaged member of a small but passionate team.

Program Coordinator

We’re seeking a skilled, mission-driven Program Coordinator to support creative arts based mental wellbeing programs, like Life On Art’s Heart Stories, at correctional facilities. This role combines strong administrative leadership with hands-on support for workshops, participant engagement, and collaboration across teams and partners.

In addition to its strong administrative focus, this role supports workshop facilitation, fosters participant engagement, and helps build a collaborative environment among incarcerated individuals, correctional staff and nonprofit allies.

The ideal candidate is organized, creative, and committed to social justice. They’re a strong communicator, comfortable in correctional institution settings, and able to balance logistics with relationship-building. A background and/or passion for the arts or mental health is a plus. Lived experience or deep community ties are highly valued. Occasional evening and weekend availability required.



Job Requirements and Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • At least 2 years experience in program coordination, administration, carceral systems, or nonprofit program support, preferably in community-based or justice-related settings.

  • Strong organizational and administrative skills with a track record of managing multiple priorities and logistics effectively.

  • Comfortable working in correctional or institutional environments; experience working with incarcerated populations and correctional staff is a strong plus.

English Language Communication Skills: 

  • Fluency in oral and written English required, knowledge of other languages (in particular, Spanish) is a plus.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and listening skills required, with sensitivity and appreciation for diverse viewpoints and various communication styles.

Function-Specific Skills:

  • Project management skills and ability to juggle multiple priorities in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

  • Ability to manage several tasks and competing priorities in a highly collaborative, multi-stakeholder environment.

  • Demonstrates cooperation, respect, empathy, and proactive and clear communication, and positively contributes to team morale and healthy engagement with clients and collaborators.

  • Ability to work collaboratively, articulate clear expectations, and negotiate needs and resources with colleagues.

Technical Skills:

  • Competently uses Salesforce, Excel, Squarespace, Monday.com, Jotform, Mailchimp, Zoom, Slack, and Canva.

  • Artistic skills like sketching, painting, design, sculpting, videography, photography, printmaking, color theory or other creative arts are welcome but not required. 

Judgment and Independence: 

  • Ability to exercise good judgment, manage time effectively to solve problems, and respond appropriately to changing circumstances and priorities. 

  • Ability to work independently and proactively, and as part of a vibrant and diverse team. 

  • Commitment to the vision, mission, and values that underlie Life On Art’s work.

  • Ability to handle sensitive information with a high degree of confidentiality.

  • High proficiency with follow-through, dependability, and attention to detail to meet deadlines with accuracy. 

Physical Demands: 

  • Must be able to use a computer for extended periods of time up to 8 hours per day.  

  • Must be able to frequently communicate orally in-person, online (e.g. Zoom meetings) and by telephone.

  • Must be able to lift and move small objects up to 15 pounds. 

Attendance and Availability: 

  • Must be able to work during normal office hours. 

  • Must be available to occasionally work outside of regular hours when needed.

  • Must be available to travel within CA for occasional meetings and conferences.

The pay range of this non-exempt position is $31.00 - $36.00 an hour.
